This is a list of historical events that occur in Made in Abyss. All dates are approximate, and calculated back from the start of the series (or the present time). Some dates may be inconsistent because of the effect of time dilation in The Abyss.

Spoiler warning: The following section contains spoilers. Read with caution.

Tens of thousands of years ago:

• Eternal Fortunes from ancient times become fossilized within The Abyss.

6,000 years ago:

• The first known group of Burial Tower Praying Skeletons is entombed.

Unknown dates from at least 4,500 years ago (150 years ago, 6^th Layer time):

• The adoptive father of Vueko, Juroimoh, discovers the Star Compass on a ship of dead sailors, save for one traumatized survivor.
• Vueko inherits the Star Compass and uses it to navigate Ganja to The Abyss, where she trades it to the Abyss Tribe.
• Irumyuui travels with Ganja, into The Abyss, and falls victim to Pseudowater.
• Two Cradles of Desire are used on Irumyuui, saving Ganja from Pseudowater and establishing The Village of Iruburu.
• Irumyuui confiscates a third Cradle of Desire from Wazukyan and gives birth to Faputa.
• Forbidden from Iruburu, Faputa meets Gaburoon, learning the Abyssal language and the meaning of Value.

4,000 years ago:

• The Wind-Riding Windmills in the 2^nd Layer were built at least 4,000 years ago. They are used to catch updrafts.
• The second known group of Burial Tower Praying Skeletons is entombed.

Unknown dates from at least 3,000 years ago (100 years ago, 6^th Layer time):

• Dream-retreat Alcoholic Medicine is produced in The Village of Iruburu.

2,000 years ago:

• A group of Praying Skeletons found in an area known as "The Abode of Trees and Fossils" is entombed.
• The third (and most recent) known group of Burial Tower Praying Skeletons is entombed.
• The appearance of a Sakawatari is recorded in murals.

1,900 years ago:

• The Abyss is discovered by the future inhabitants of Orth.

300 years ago

• Among the tens of thousands of Glyphs found in The Abyss, those that are "comparatively straightforward ideographs" (known as "simplified characters") become adopted in Orth.

250 years ago

• A mysterious set of letters containing the first and only account of the curse of the 7^th Layer is found within the 1^st Layer. It is then suddenly lost. Information from the letters circulate through songs and fairytales, becoming known as The Song of Hariyomari.

50 years ago:

• Ozen is rumored to have become a White Whistle Delver around this time.

Unknown dates:

• Ozen meets the child Lyza and takes her on as an apprentice.

15 years ago:

• The Zoaholic is considered "lost" by official sources.

12 years ago:

• Ozen, Torka, and a pregnant Lyza are dispatched on a special mission to the 4^th Layer, to retrieve the Unheard Bell.
• Umbra Hands come into contact with Lyza's expedition, while attempting to retrieve the Unheard Bell. At this time, they are still considered to be foreigners.
• Torka does not survive the mission, but Lyza's stillborn daughter, Riko, is revived by the Curse-Warding Box.

10 years ago:

• Bondrewd establishes the Forward Operating Base Ido Front in the remains of an ancient ritual site in the deepest part of the 5^th Layer.
• Lyza takes Jiruo as an apprentice, leaving Riko in his care at Belchero Orphanage, before going on her Last Dive. She asks Ozen to guide her daughter, should she ever choose to descend into The Abyss.

Unknown dates:

• Bondrewd begins experimenting on children gathered from places like Sereny.
• After overseeing the Blessing ritual of Nanachi and Mitty, Bondrewd enlists Nanachi in developing the Cartridges.
• Bondrewd visits The Village of Iruburu, taking Mitty with him. Belaf trades most of his body to make a perfect replica of Mitty, down to the soul.
• Bondrewd conducts experiments on the immortal Mitty, some time after returning from Iruburu.
• Bondrewd begins raising Prushka, the orphaned daughter of an Umbra Hand.

8 years ago:

• An attempt to use an airship to descend into The Abyss ends in failure. Marulk, the sole survivor, is rescued by Ozen.

7 years ago:

• Mio visits Orth, encountering a 5-year-old Riko and her pet dog, Reg.

Unknown dates:

• Nanachi escapes Ido Front, settling at the outer edge of the 4^th Layer, and searches for a way to kill Mitty.
• Bondrewd laments the departure of Nanachi and Mitty. Prushka volunteers to become a collaborator in his research.
• Lyza encounters the Human-like Silhouette at the entrance to the 7^th Layer.
• Reg engages in battle with the Human-like Silhouette, who is his sister.
• Lyza comes into contact with Reg.
• Reg meets Faputa and Gaburoon. After spending some time in the 6^th Layer, he leaves Faputa to carry out his mission.
• Reg constructs a grave with Lyza's belongings, in the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience

Start of the story:

• Ozen finds Lyza's Blaze Reap, White Whistle, and other belongings in the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience.
• Riko discovers the Star Compass and begins experimenting on it.
• Cravagli and Tepaste depart on an illegal Last Dive.
• A Sakawatari is seen in the upper layers. Its appearance is believed to be a sign that the end of the 2,000 year cycle is approaching. This Sakawatari is rumored to be the very same creature depicted on the murals from the cycle 2,000 years ago.
• Reg, having reached the 1^st Layer, saves Riko from a Crimson Splitjaw and loses his memories.

2 weeks after the start of the story:

• Forward Expedition Party (lead by Hablog, Simred, and Gallice) uncovers a Mysterious Object in the Joint Delving Site of the 2^nd Layer.
• Nishagora apprehends Tepaste in the 6^th Layer. Cravagli seemingly dies from sustained injuries and dehydration.

2 months after the start of the story:

• Hablog returns to Orth with Lyza's White Whistle and notes.
• Riko receives her mother's White Whistle, prior to the Resurrection Festival.
• Srajo is made aware of the contents of Lyza's Notes.
• Four days after Hablog returns to Orth, Riko & Reg descend into The Abyss. Kiyui falls ill to Birthday-Death Disease, his birthday being only two days away.

Journey into The Abyss:

• Riko loses the Star Compass, falling into The Abyss.
• Kiyui's birthday has come and he is taken out of Orth and into the Caravan Fleet.
• Riko and Reg depart the 2^nd Layer, after having trained with Ozen at Seeker Camp.
• Jiruo visits Ozen to discuss Birthday-Death Disease.
• Riko sends a Mail Balloon from the 4^th Layer.
• Wakuna takes their Last Dive.
• Srajo and Hail Hex pass through Ido Front. They are confronted by Bondrewd and the Umbra Hands before taking their Last Dive.
• Remayo and Neyozel take their Last Dive in pursuit of Hail Hex.
• Riko and her friends come into conflict with Bondrewd at Ido Front. Prushka perishes and becomes Riko's White Whistle. Team Riko takes their Last Dive.

Last Dive:

• A downpour of Funeral Slips from Orth falls into the 6^th Layer.
• Wazukyan, one of The Three Sages of Iruburu, explains that the village has existed for 150 years.
  According to information given by Srajo, this would have been over 4,500 years on the surface.
• The Village of Iruburu is destroyed, Faputa joins Riko's team.

Unknown dates:

• In the anime adaptation, by the time Riko's Mail Balloon reaches Nat, the town of Orth has already been evacuated. Only Delvers remain.
