The Golden City (黄金 (おうごん) 郷 (きょう) , Ōgonkyō) refers to a fabled civilization that is said to rest deep within The Abyss. While little is known about its residents or culture, its legend persists from the distant past into the present day.

Not to be confused with the 6^th Layer, which is also sometimes referred to as the “Golden City”.

Description

Before the City of Orth was established, the surface of The Abyss was inhabited by an ancient Abyss Tribe. This tribe carried a tradition of marking their bodies with patterns in such a way so as to mimic the appearance of the Golden City’s residents.

When Ganja, the explorers that had encountered the tribe, ventured into The Abyss, seeking the Golden City themselves, they found an empty, ruinous city below the Absolute Boundary, in the 6^th Layer. Their leader, Wazukyan, declared the layer would be their new home and that they would be “the first citizens of the golden city at the bottom of this world”. It is unknown if these ruins were, at one time, the fabled city, as Irumyuui speculates, or if the true Golden City had always resided somewhere deeper within The Abyss.

In the present, after Riko and her team, Hello Abyss, arrive in Iruburu, Vueko sees Reg, wondering to herself whether he is a “true resident of the Golden City”.
