Shroombears (タケグマ, Takeguma) are creatures which can be found at the 4th Layer of The Abyss. Their danger classification is unknown, but they seem to lack offensive capabilities and appear to be docile.[2]
Description[]
Shroombears are small mammals with beady eyes, large noses, stocky bodies, short legs, and a long thin tail. They have a symbiotic relationship with Water-shrooms, which can be found growing on their backs.
When the Shroombears grow weak, the Water-shrooms release their stored nutrients into the body of their Shroombear host, restoring it to health.[3] Removing the Water-shrooms from their backs may even lead to their death.[4]
Shroombear flesh is edible and has been described as being dark in color.[5] Since the main series has only seen Reg's disastrous attempt to prepare the meat, it is unknown whether it can be made palatable or not.[6]
