This article is about the members of Hail Hex. For the siblings featured in Distant Characters, see Sherumi and Menae.
"Snipers" Sherumi and Menae (
Appearance[]
As members of Hail Hex, they wear loose, frilly tops that cover their hands, skirts, "masking plates" that cover their faces, and beret-like caps. Additionally, they wear an accessory that resembles a gas mask and an unknown "glossy, pale colored whistle-like" object.[2][3]
They lack arms and legs and are adorned with metal sockets and fur just short of where one would normally find elbows or knees. As such, they rely on Artifacts. Riko identifies Third Works being used for prosthetic legs and, as of yet, unseen replacements for arms. They have animal-like features, such as floppy ears on the top of their heads and six nipples on their torsos. According to Reg and Nanachi, they are capable of secreting an unknown liquid from their nipples. They both have a scar going down their spine.[4][3]
Personality[]
As underlings of Srajo, they are shown to be dutiful and inquisitive.[5][6]
They appear shy but also playful, when interacting with Riko's team. They seem to have quickly taken a particular liking to Reg.[7]
History[]
Curse Fleet Arc[]
Sherumi and Menae run up to Nishagora's arms as she and Riko's party arrive at Camp Number 5 and are greeted by a member of Hail Hex and Srajo.[8]
Riko's team are then to be tested in order to see if they can be trusted and whether they're The Priestess's scattered bait. They are to bring Nishagora down into the ground by any means necessary and Reg volunteers to do this alone while Nanachi assists in predicting moves and Riko prepares to blow her whistle. As they are fighting, Sherumi and Menae wonder whether they are themselves different from what Reg is, to which Srajo tells them to pay attention as he is not what they mean. [9]
While Reg has been powered up by Riko blowing her whistle and Nishagora is now on the other side of taking a beating, Faputa notices that Srajo hands down the creature on her neck to Sherumi and Menae and is preparing to use her own whistle. Srajo then commands Sherumi and Menae to 'take the Waveproof Stance' and blows on her own whistle, powering up Nishagora similar to how Reg does, covering her in white fur.[10]
Reg and Tepaste are asked by Srajo to bathe Sherumi and Menae, Tepaste instructs them to take off their Works.[11] Sherumi and Menae scream offscreen and as Reg enters the room it is revealed their 4 limbs are prostheses. Reg takes charge of getting Menae out of the bathtub and Menae is impressed by Reg's extending arms, Reg asks how he got his but Menae asks Reg not to make him remember as he and his friends too will turn out like this.[12]
Reg helps Sherumi and Menae so they don't burn themselves as he looks back at his previous conversation with Menae.[13] After sharing a meal, both teams prepare to set out on a temporary joint expedition until they can find a place to base in the 7th Layer.[14]
As both groups move forward, they are stopped by their senses being negated and are suddenly attacked by a creature, Nanachi moves in to protect an attack on Sherumi and Menae and Reg extends his arm in an attempt to save Nanachi.[15]
As Reg latches onto the assailant, Nishagora and Tepaste fasten him to a nearby rock formation.[16] Srajo fires a Popple Gun into the haze to reveal the Mysterious Beast which had ambushed the group.[17] Faputa and Yataramar pursue, the latter revealing a transformation triggered by Srajo's White Whistle.[18]
Faputa distracts the creature while Yataramar attempts to secure then free Nanachi.[19][20] A combined attack from a released Sherumi & Menae is able to injure the monstrous arm holding onto Nanachi, and Srajo severs it with another strike from the Popple Gun.[21] Yataramar uncovers Nanachi, revealing grievous wounds.[22]
Sherumi and Menae then travel with the rest of Hail Hex to a new, hidden camp to treat Nanachi. Menae draws a picture of Nanachi in thanks for them saving both of them, making Reg angry.[23] Srajo apologizes for Menae, and requests he be allowed to continue, in light of the fact that he and Sherumi have only one month left to live[24]. Srajo explains that, despite their prosthetics, the relics can only sustain them for so long.
Abilities[]
White Whistle Release[]
After receiving the release of the White Whistle and by focusing on the target, they were capable of tearing through the tentacle of the mysterious creature from the Maelstrom Danger Zone through mysterious means.[25]
Trivia[]
- Srajo refers to them with the moniker "Snipers".[1]
- According to Ozen, twins are exceedingly rare in Orth. Every set of twins born there is named "Sherumi and Menae", always for seemingly unrelated reasons. Supposedly, the names "Sherumi and Menae" appeared in the original texts of the Hariyomari Collection; presumably these names disappeared with the lost portion of the script.[3]
- For unknown reasons, as of the entrance into the Final Maelstrom, it is revealed they only have one month left to live.[24]
