The Made in Abyss story has seen multiple adaptations. To help guide fans of the series, we have compiled a list of notable changes made between different media.

Manga-only Content

Volume 1

Chapter 1: Orth: The City of the Great Pit

• The beginning sequence with Riko, Nat, Shiggy, and Kiyui originally takes place in the classroom of Belchero Orphanage. In the anime, it takes place inside Riko's room, after Reg has already been introduced. Nat and Shiggy also do not make fun of Riko.
• The sequence during which Riko and Kiyui hang out in Laffi's Shop takes place prior to the orphans going delving. In the anime, it takes place after Reg has already been taken in by the orphanage..
• Riko is shown preparing for her trip, the night before.

Chapter 2: The Abode of Trees and Fossils

• After being saved from the Crimson Splitjaw, by a strange light, Riko talks to Nat before making an excuse to go look for the source of the light.

Chapter 3: Riko's Room: Former Torture Chamber

• Reg notices a symbol on his helmet, unlike in the anime, where he doesn't try it on.
• Reg hides alone, as Jiruo comes back for Riko, who had escaped from him.

Chapter 4: Belchero Orphanage

• Reg's name is revealed during his introduction to Jiruo.

Chapter 6: Premonition

• In Reg's recollection of the previous night, Riko reveals Lyza's Letter and her plan to adventure into The Abyss.
• Reg remembers that Riko likes to hoard Artifacts for herself, like the Scaled Umbrella, Sun Sphere, Star Compass, and Blue Pendant.

Chapter 7: Eve of Departure

• After returning from The Abyss, Reg and Nat visit the relic appraisal shop.

Chapter 8: Here We Go!

• Reg looks for Nat in his room before meeting up with Riko and Shiggy.

Volume 2

Chapter 15: The Unmovable Sovereign

• Ozen notices the door is open, after Reg shoots the Incinerator.

Chapter 16: A Vile Mentoring Method

• Ozen recalls her relationship with Lyza, leading up to Lyza's face-reveal.

Volume 3

Chapter 17: Survival Training

• Ozen mentions that there are beings living along the path to the bottom of the netherworld called "Gatekeepers."

Chapter 18: The Depths' Third Layer: The Great Fault

• Riko uses a Sun Sphere to bait the Crimson Splitjaw, remembering that they eat Artifacts. Reg drives the Crimson Splitjaw away with a headbutt and a strike with his two hands, not the Incinerator.

Volume 4

Chapter 26: A Fresh Start

• Nanachi is shown measuring the backpack on Reg.

Chapter 27: The Forbidden Field of Flowers

• The Umbra Hand attempts to contact Peijin, but the Umbra Hand determines that he won't make it back in time. He explains to Reg that the Moon Whistles he entrusted to that duty weren't able to return before the burn.
• Reg shows his frustration about the burning of the field.

Chapter 28: The Entrance to the Sixth Layer

• Riko is astonished by the width of the 5^th Layer, recalling that it's said to be "tens of times the size of Orth".
• Reg wonders if he came up through the Altar of the Absolute Boundary. Nanachi replies that, since he can hold his breath, he probably just swam up.

Chapter 30: Unseen Peril

• Nanachi asks about the other White Whistles, to which Bondrewd replies that they both went down to the 6^th Layer. Srajo left without notice and Wakuna left using their own personal relic.

Chapter 31: Despair and Hope

• Prushka is surrounded by Umbra Hands, after letting Riko's team use the boat to escape.

Chapter 32: The End of a Fierce Fight

• Nanachi wears Riko's glasses, after being struck by the Curse of the 5^th Layer.
• Hablog gives an account of Bondrewd's deeds to Nat and Shiggy, as Bondrewd is shown to have survived the Stingerhead ambush.

Volume 5

Chapter 33: The True Nature of the Mask

• Riko pictures the Artifacts from the Compilation of Recorded Relics, trying to figure out which Artifact had brought Bondrewd back to life. Nanachi prevents Reg from looking at Bondrewd's corpse.
• Reg enters Ido Front from inside, by diving in the water. He finds the Failed Umbra Hands roaming around doing menial tasks, wearing Prushka's papier-mâché whistles. Reg shows compassion for what's happened to Prushka.

Chapter 34: Counterattack

• Bondrewd assumes that Team Riko came to create the raw material for Your Worth; since Nanachi is a "blessed child" and Reg a mechanical boy, he concludes that Riko must be the one to be used as offering.
• Bondrewd refers to the 6^th Layer and beyond as the "pivotal area of the netherworld, from which one can never return."

Chapter 35: Clouded Memory

• Nanachi endures the Curse of the 5^th Layer and concentrates to regain their senses.
• Reg pictures both Lyza and the Human-like Silhouette as he tries to express what happened to Nanachi.

Chapter 37: Flower of Dawn

• Gueira tells Prushka that he's heard that creatures from the Absolute Boundary possess the very same ability that let Prushka reveal things where she couldn't normally see.
• Prushka remembers the time she learned about Cartridges, telling Bondrewd that she'd help him, as he had lost some "valuable collaborators".
• Though not adapted into the movie version, the scene where Prushka and Gueira gift the Failed Umbra Hands their papier-mâché whistles appears as part of the OVA, Together with Papa.
• Prushka remembering when Bondrewd had died and promising to love him forever, so that he doesn't go away.

Chapter 38: The Challengers

• Nanachi notices Bondrewd's already gone by the time they say their last words to him.

Volume 6

Side Story Chapter 1: Reg

• A flashback of Mio arriving in Orth, seeing a young Riko and her dog. 7 years later, Mio sees Riko and Reg. She speculates that despite all expectations, Riko might just be able to "do something about The Abyss".
• Mio reads a notice about an Airship disaster which took place the year prior.

Chapter 42: Princess of the Hollows

• Reg realizes that he forgot to ask Faputa about Prushka and the Mail Balloon. He wonders if he should send his worries in a balloon, too, and about Nat and Shiggy's condition.

Side Story Chapter 2: Mio

• Nat and Shiggy slack off and talk about the Praying Skeletons found at the Burial Tower in the 1^st Layer. When Laffi asks about Kiyui's condition, Mio overhears the rumor about Birthday-Death Disease. Nat and Shiggy bring her back to Belchero Orphanage, to take a look at Kiyui. Jiruo explains the situation to her and is upset that Kiyui might die without living his fullest.

Side Story Chapter 3: Jiruo

• Jiruo descends to the Seeker Camp and chats with Ozen about the Birthday-Death Disease. Menae speaks to the corpse of Sherumi.

Volume 7

Chapter 44: Hollows' Restaurant

• Maaa lifts Riko high-up, so she can see inside of the Narehate Restaurant, since it's very crowded.
• Riko explains her purchase of the old-style delving helmet from Gaume.

Chapter 45: Captive

• Vueko answers Riko's question in the language of Iruburu.

Chapter 46: The Luring

• During the Luring, it is shown that the Fuzosheppu is being balanced as it attacks the villagers.
• Majikaja tells Riko to calm down, as getting too worked up makes Riko smell strange.
• Vueko tells Riko to leave the Fuzosheppu to the sticky balancing and not worry, as it's alright, as long as the overall Value of the village increases.
• Majikaja answers Riko's question, saying that "just that has enormous Value that can make all sorts of things move."

Chapter 47: The Secret of the Village

• Riko faints from exhaustion, before Reg takes off to see Faputa again.
• Vueko first tells a summary of their arrival to the 6^th Layer before being interrupted by Moogie and asks who among them know the common language.

Volume 8

Chapter 49: The Golden City

• The water-tasting squad follow the Interference Units to two water deposits before visiting the Pseudowater pond. One shows no signs of life around and is contaminated with mineral pollution from a fallen tower. The second one is so extremely hot that not even the Interference Units can approach.
• In a quick sequence of events, an unknown creature is seen looming over the Ganja camp, the Ganja squad eat a bad-tasting soup, and Vueko is seen in bed with Pakkoyan as Irumyuui accidentally witnesses.

Chapter 50: The Cradle of Desire

• An Interference Unit mentions that Artifacts appear where they once were not, after Wazukyan asks where the food survey team might've found the Cradle of Desire.

Volume 9

Chapter 52: Faputa's Promise

• Reg notices Vueko being taken by Wazukyan.

Chapter 55: Faputa and Reg

• Riko tells Reg that "we'd be goners if Faputa hadn't come". Moogie is torn between her feelings about the drying area, where she'd chat with familiar faces, being destroyed and her inherent feeling of wanting to touch Faputa. Reg asks Riko to assist him in stopping Faputa somehow.
• Multiple villagers try to approach Faputa while she's distracted with Reg.
• Faputa says she doesn't let Gaburoon exchange more than twelve words with the villagers.
• Faputa takes a moment to play with the real Reg instead of her dolls before he leaves for "Haku."

Volume 10

Chapter 57: Value

• Some villagers express shock at seeing an Uranaguapu, having never seen them during a Luring.
• The villagers look on in impotent terror, as Faputa is being eaten, since they'll just disappear if they go to help.

Chapter 58: Towards the Path of Flame

• Majikaja says the person who helped him move into the strong body has disappeared.

Anime-only Content

Season 1

Episode 1: The City of the Great Pit

• After luring the Crimson Splitjaw and falling down a hole, instead of staying in place Riko gets chased until she is ultimately saved from the Crimson Splitjaw by a mysterious light.
• Nat's state is not revealed until after Riko finds Reg.
• After hearing Jiruo coming back for Riko, instead of hiding and letting Riko take further punishment, Reg makes use of his extendable arms and helps Riko escape.
• Riko names Reg after they escape from Jiruo, instead of being part of Reg's first meeting with Jiruo.

Episode 2: Resurrection Festival

• The explanation for the curse is narrated by Shiggy instead of being a recollection of Jiruo's lecture by Riko.

Episode 3: Departure

• Riko reveals to everyone the night before Reg's first trip as a Red Whistle Lyza's Letter and her plans of leaving into the Abyss, instead of happening as a recollection of Reg.

Episode 5: Incinerator

• Reg faints after Riko's description of the Incinerator.
• Riko finds a big pile of relics and collects a Sun Sphere.

Episode 6: Seeker Camp

• Reg asks directly whether Marulk is a girl.
• The sequence concerning Riko's discovery of the headless monster and telling Marulk and Reg happens chronologically, not in flashback format.

Episode 7: The Unmovable Sovereign

• Hablog's account about Ozen is shown before the reveal of Riko's birth.
• Ozen only reminisces of her first encounter with Lyza and Lyza becoming a Black Whistle as she leaves her private room.

Episode 8: Survival Training

• As Zapo mentions how Reg and Riko best learn to depend on one another, Ozen reminisces of her adventures with Lyza and the sequence of events relating to Riko's birth.
• As Riko and Reg depart into the 3^rd Layer, Ozen reminisces of Lyza leaving to the bottom of the Abyss and her promise to reveal the truth to Riko, leading up to Lyza's face-reveal.

Episode 9: The Great Fault

• Nat notices Shiggy drawing on a map he copied from the director's office; Shiggy tells Nat that he estimates Reg and Riko are already in the 3^rd Layer.
• Riko and Reg encounter a Madokajack first inside the imprisoned pirate ship before the Crimson Splitjaw. Reg fires the incinerator at the Madokajack, leaving himself unconscious after escaping from the Crimson Splitjaw.
• Reg wakes up and strikes the Crimson Splitjaw with a headbutt, Riko hands the Blaze Reap to Reg. Riko doesn't use a Sun Sphere and Reg does not strike the Crimson Splitjaw with his fists.

Episode 13: The Challengers

• Nanachi recalls the time in Sereny before traveling with Bondrewd, they're reading a book that contains an updated Map of the Abyss that is not available even to Red Whistles. Whereas in the manga the book only contains the old map.
• The scene where Bondrewd checks that Mitty's Lamp has turned off occurs at the end of the episode, instead of right after Mitty's soul has been released.
• Riko, Reg and Nanachi send a Mail Balloon, passing through every layer they've been so far and the people they've met until it reaches the 1^st Layer where Nat and Shiggy pick it up. Nat and Shiggy return to Orth, where an abundance of Eternal Fortune petals lie on the streets.

Season 2

Episode 2: Capital of the Unreturned

• A shot of Faputa's figure looking at Riko's team when they send the Mail Balloon.

Episode 3: Village of the Hollows

• Reg and Nanachi wonder what "Value" is.

Episode 4: Friend

• Nanachi hears the ruckus made by the balancing against the alley perpetrators but tells Majikaja to keep on guiding them.
• Riko's perspective is shown continuously up to Wazukyan's introduction.
• Majikaja is shown to bring Nanachi inside Belaf's House.
• Vueko is revealed to be imprisoned with the balancing before Riko finds her in Doguupu.

Episode 5: Concealment

• Reg's perspective is shown continuously up until they reach Iruburu.

Episode 7: The Cradle of Desire

• Vueko tells the events of Ganja Squad discovering they could no longer leave the 6^th Layer, in order.

Episode 12: Gold

• It is made clear what Mepopohon was talking about to Reg.
• Maaa puts the glasses on Riko, she wakes up and Maaa is gone, leaving the doll Riko made.

Movie-only Content

Movie 1: Journey's Dawn

• A scene describing the discovery of The Abyss 1,900 years ago and the development of what is now called Orth.
• On the mission to retrieve the Unheard Bell, Torka serves stew to Lyza, who is holding a foreign delver's helmet. Ozen approaches Torka, who misunderstands Ozen for not liking the stew. Lyza affirms that she was, instead, asking for more. Torka says they're going past the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience, which Lyza intended on showing to Torka and their unborn daughter, Riko.

Movie 2: Wandering Twilight

• Nat notices Shiggy drawing on a map he copied from the director's office; Shiggy tells Nat that he estimates that Reg and Riko are already in the 3^rd Layer.
• Riko and Reg encounter the Crimson Splitjaw inside the imprisoned pirate ship and are chased into a cave. Reg hesitates to fire the incinerator, but Riko hands Reg the Blaze Reap. Riko doesn't use a Sun Sphere and Reg does not strike the Crimson Splitjaw with his head and fists.
• Bondrewd watches over the lamp for Mitty being turned off and congratulates Nanachi. Prushka comes running to see what he's doing.

Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul

• As the team travels down, Nanachi climbs down onto a pillar, while Reg brings Riko down with his arms. Reg reassures Nanachi that they can rely on their information regarding the layout of The Abyss. Nanachi says they've got to respect their leader's opinion.
• Reg can be seen zooming-in to the collapsed delvers in the Garden of the Flowers of Resilience.
• Nanachi throws, with vigor, the Amaranthine-Deceptor that bit them.
• A water support can be seen collapsing in the 5^th Layer, opening a path in the Sea of Corpses.
• Prushka is shown watching the group as they arrive.
• Reg sees a vision of the Human-like Silhouette, as he looks at Bondrewd.
• Nanachi says they've come to an understanding of sorts with Bondrewd, respecting their leader's decision.
