Narehate ( () () ), or Hollows, are generally known as beings who have survived the 6th Layer's Curse and whose bodies have become deformed as a result, although there are other means of becoming one.[1][2] They can take many different forms, depending on the circumstances of their transformation.[3][4] Their exact properties as a species are unknown.[5]

Description[]

The existence of Narehate are first mentioned in Lyza's Notes in reference to the Human-like Silhouette.[6] There is no mention of Narehate again until Riko and Reg reach the 4th Layer, where they encounter Nanachi and Mitty.[7] According to Nanachi, when Delvers spot a Narehate they put them to death and collect their belongings, believing it is better to simply tell people they died than the alternative. As such, being seen by Delvers would be a huge risk for them, as they would then be hunted down and captured as proof of someone surviving the ascent from the 6th Layer with their humanity intact.[8]

Srajo later explains that transformed Narehate bear a wound of honor that shows they were able to reach the Absolute Boundary; however, they must be disposed of for they will never regain their humanity. In doing so, this is seen as a way to "preserve their honor."[9]

Ido Front[]

Bondrewd and an amorphous type Narehate from the results of his experiments

Many of Bondrewd's experiments at Ido Front ended with his test subjects becoming Narehate, which were abandoned in the Miniature Garden Of Dawn on the 6th Layer.[10] Most end up as amorphous blobs of flesh with little to no brain activity. So far, Mitty is the only known Narehate that is near-indestructible, can survive without food or water, and can neutralize any toxins she comes into contact with.[11] Any physical wounds received simply heal, though the tissue becomes slightly more mangled with each regeneration.[12] However, certain Artifacts, such as Sparagmos and the Incinerator are capable of inflicting permanent damage to her.[13] Inside Ido Front, once experimented on by Bondrewd, the status of a particular Narehate's life signature can be monitored. Their status is indicated by means of a reddish light enclosed in a tube. An absence of light indicates that they are dead.[14]

In very special circumstances, due to a practice that places one person's burden of the Curse onto another, sometimes the effects of the Curse can be nullified, and what is received instead is what Bondrewd refers to as the "Blessing."[15] The result of this ends with the subject still being deformed, but their mind and overall anatomy remains intact. Rather than becoming unrecognizable, people who receive the Blessing gain animalistic qualities such as fur and claws.[16] The only two known beings who have become Narehate due to this method are Nanachi, and Bondrewd himself.[17][18]

Iruburu[]

The bodies of all us Hollows, more or less take on the shape of our respective desires.

Majikaja, to Nanachi

Narehate at The Village of Iruburu are very different than the Narehate at Ido Front. They take many different shapes and forms, and seem to be made of many different materials.[19] Majikaja stated that when someone chooses to become a Narehate, they become bound to the village and cannot leave. In return, they receive the form of their desire and the village's protection.[20] While many of the Narehate of Iruburu seem to be somewhat amorphous, most of them retain their humanity and are able to communicate with one another using Iruburu's language or gesticulation.[21] Some are even able to speak the language of the Delvers.[22] Additionally, villagers such as Maaa and Juroimoh were not human to begin with, instead being created from excess Value from within the village.[23]

Unlike the village inhabitants, Faputa is a Narehate similar to Nanachi and Bondrewd, in that she is humanoid and intelligent; though noticeably more animalistic than either of them, both physically and mentally. She originates from Irumyuui, who gave birth to her using all three Cradles of Desire that Ganja had collected.[24]

Juusou[]

They're disposed of without any regard for whether their humanity remains. For most, this occurs as soon as they're born. Concealment, you know… There's always a reason for it. You see, this is the disgrace of cave-raiding history.

Srajo, to Team Riko

Juusou (獣相 (ジュウソウ) , Jūsō), or Beast-guises, are those "born as Narehate" who only appear very rarely among those born in The Abyss. Their existence is kept secret from Delvers, with the exception of White Whistles and a few select others. They are remarkable in that they still retain their humanity, despite otherwise being considered full Narehate, much like Blessed Narehate. Oftentimes, they are killed upon birth, for circumstances that are not entirely clear.[25] Some Juusou, such as Nishagora, Yataramar, and the Hail Hex twins, have been seen to "activate" from the use of a White Whistle, much like an Artifact.[26][27][28]

They possess a special organ called the Beast Stone (獣石 (けものいし) , Kemono-ishi) near their hearts, also called the Awakening Organ, implying it's the mechanism by which Juusou activate. Neyozel says that Srajo is able to sense his Beast Stone, even at such a long distance.[29]
