Gold is the twelfth and final episode of the Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun anime series.
Synopsis[]
Faputa confronts the many creatures that invaded The Village of Iruburu and ravaged her body previously, letting out a scream that signals Juroimoh to wake and aid in combat. Juroimoh unsheathes his sword and unleashes its secret power, Faputa bites into one of the creatures. The creature tries to bite Faputa back but Faputa's blood eats the beast's fangs.[1]
Faputa ponders about accepting the fact that she's one like the villagers, who came to be because of her mother, and strikes into one of the Turbinid-Dragon which repels her with its explosive scales, then lands onto a flying beast. Her Eye glows with fire and shows a complex symbol similar to that found on Reg's helmet. Faputa heads straight towards the Turbinid-Dragon and dares the creatures to stop her.[2]
In a flashback sequence, Gaburoon and Faputa meet each other. Gaburoon teaches her about her mother's language and the system of Value, while tasking her to gather things to repair themself. Gaburoon gives her a name, "Faputa", created from "FAU", meaning "noble maiden", and "APUTA", meaning "immortal one". Faputa, delighted with her name, gifts Gaburoon with their own name, "Gaburoon", meaning "the Queen's guardian" in her mother's language.[3]
Sometime later, Faputa encounters Riko's team sleeping, asking whether Reg really is him, whether Riko is Reg's Haku and where her soul came from, as well as asking whether Reg brought Nanachi there after smelling them. Faputa estimates Riko's and Nanachi's value and leaves after taking Prushka, since she cannot make her voice heard as a "stone-person". Gaburoon tells her someone in the village can beautify Prushka and Faputa asks them to send her to the "skilled villager". Gaburoon notices Faputa holding onto some hair and she says that since Reg's companions are frail she will make a beast repellent mixing their hair with Dread-Owle's plumage. Gaburoon then asks Faputa why she doesn't instead, simply talk to them directly, to which Faputa answers timidly that she doesn't like lots of eyes. Gaburoon is distraught, worrying how she'll be able to manage, to which Faputa shamefully strikes Gaburoon.[4] In the present, the wail of multiple creatures can be heard, focusing on the now dysfunctional Gaburoon. Faputa battles fiercely with both Turbinid-Dragons.
After the invasion of the creatures to Iruburu, Riko wakes up accompanied by Moogie, Meinya, Maaa, Pakkoyan, Mepopohon, Nanachi and Reg on top of Majikaja heading to the bottom of the village. Nanachi, Riko and Reg apologize for their shortcomings and Moogie reassures them that all of this was inevitable taking into account the origin of the village. As Moogie contemplates what was the point of them settling in the village, she refers to Wazukyan, who is now laying on his deathbed after falling all the way from the top while kidnapping Vueko.[5]
Wazukyan expresses tiredness and refutes Moogie's claim of him being the mastermind, since all the actions that brought the destruction of the village were brought by each individual's way of caring for each other, calling it an accumulation of deeds. He then asks Riko if she's glad to have come to the village. Riko responds enthusiastically that yes, she's glad to have met all the people and the village since she wouldn't have thought of this place existing otherwise. Riko reveals to Wazukyan that she also once possessed the Star Compass and hopes that the next person to obtain it goes on an adventure and becomes glad they did.[6]
Nanachi asks Wazukyan what exactly was his endgame, to which Wazukyan explains he wanted to become something more than a human since in order to be able to challenge the Abyss one must surpass humanity. He explains that in order to become something more than a human does not take becoming a Narehate, obtaining the blessing or obtaining a body that'll triumph over the Curse. It is only through accumulation. Accumulation to Wazukyan means the toughness built from nestling around the abyss leading to the curiosity and purity of those that challenge the beyond, intermingled with the "heaven-sent" children guided to the depths of the Abyss. Wazukyan tells the group that they're at the tip of this accumulation, together with Faputa who is trying to figure out her path forward. Wazukyan then proclaims his final words, to look after Faputa, and that something more frightening than unfulfilled dreams wait beyond the gold for the children of the netherworld homesick for the end of their journey. Riko dismisses his words telling him that surely it won't happen as he claims.[7]
Faputa can be heard roaring, summoning the rest of the villagers. Reg has a small exchange with Mepopohon and Majikaja tells the rest that Pakkoyan is worried about Vueko and they should hurry. Moogie gives Riko Lyza's Notes that were being sold by Gaume, purchased by her and Majikaja with the pieces of Faputa. Riko thanks Maaa for accompanying her and they leave towards Faputa.[8]
Vueko is moving up some stairs heading towards Faputa, wondering and worrying about what she can do. Vueko realizes the only thing she decided for herself as she remembers the times she went through with Ganja and Irumyuui. She then notices she's beginning to suffer from the Curse of the 6th Layer, realizing she was still a human. Pakkoyan calls out to Vueko as she throws Vueko down the stairs and begins to disappear as Vueko tries to call her name. Nanachi comes and takes Vueko with them while noticing The Force Field has entered Iruburu.[9]
Faputa is still fighting the Turbinid-Dragons, but Reg interrupts her so that she's able to respond to the villagers. Riko blows on Prushka and Reg changes into his Activated form and tumbles one of the Turbinid-Dragons with his extendable arm.[10]
Faputa pleads to the rest of the villagers that they must be devoured and their Value collected so that the village is destroyed together with the invading creatures. Reg successfully brings the Turbinid-Dragons out and notices the bridge the creatures used was reinforced by Wazukyan's body, he then destroys the bridge and brings them down with it.[11]
Faputa has devoured the villagers and starts destroying the village, Majikaja escapes to safety carrying Vueko, Maaa, Riko and Nanachi. Vueko gives her farewells to Irumyuui as the village is collapsing.[12] The creatures get crushed under the rubble from the village and Faputa is thrown down a hole since she's lost her energy, having left Majikaja and Maaa on their duty to protect Riko and Vueko. Reg is able to catch Faputa as she's falling and brings her on top of Majikaja.[13]
Riko wakes up and gifts Maaa an incomplete doll in the shape of her own previous doll, Maaa looks delighted. Majikaja's container breaks down and his true form enters the body of Faputa, taking control of her body in order to help with deflecting rubble hitting them.[14] Before Reg opens the casket of Majikaja's container, Riko notices Maaa is gone.
As the village has completely collapsed, the surviving Turbinid-Dragon finishes the other ailing one and leaves, some creatures start devouring it. The group has found safety inside a cave and Faputa begins to wake up after being controlled by Majikaja, Vueko approaches Faputa slowly and as Nanachi and Riko make a pact to never forget those of the village who helped them Faputa tells Vueko they can communicate telepathically.[15]
Faputa asks Vueko about her mother and Vueko confuses Faputa with Irumyuui at first. They speak about how the memories of Vueko were the only thing that was not handed down to Faputa but as Vueko tries to continue to speak she becomes delirious and starts speaking to Faputa as if she was truly Irumyuui. Vueko passes away in Faputa's arms and she cries.[16]
There are no more creatures in sight and Faputa buries Vueko's body, leaving two gravestones side by side representing Vueko and Irumyuui. As she begins to cry for the destroyed Gaburoon, Reg invites her to joining them on their adventure. She seems hesitant but Reg insists that even though he lost the memories of her that's not the only thing Faputa is to him. Faputa tells Riko that Reg being still kind must be because of her since her duty is to cherish those she meets as Prushka says, revealing that Faputa is able to speak with Prushka.[17]
Faputa will go on her own way but will think about it, Reg and Faputa start playing with each other until Faputa goes and watches over the depths of the Abyss and says her goodbyes.[18]
