} The Form the Wish Takes is the eighth episode of the Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun anime series.
Synopsis[]
Faputa agrees to give Reg a part of her if he keeps his promise. Upon asking for more information on the promise between them, Faputa rips off one of her ears and arms and the chapter ends with her happily handing them to Reg telling him "Together, we will…exterminate them all, Reg."[1]
It is revealed the food Wazukyan had fed Vueko, Belaf, and other Ganja members, who gotten infected by the "Pseudowater", is broth made from Irumyuui's Children and to his surprise it not only gave nourishment to the infected, but also alleviated the symptoms of their infection.[2]
Belaf is shocked that he consumed Irumyuui's Children, and suffers a mental breakdown over guilt for willingly eating the broth while he was incapacitated by the Mockwater. Wazukyan tells Vueko to not worry about Belaf, as he is one of The Three Sages.[3]
Vueko, also flustered and worried, is asked by Wazukyan if she wants to see Irumyuui. Upon arrival, Vueko is horrified to see that Irumyuui has metamorphosed even more, having transformed into an enormous beast, reminiscent of a large white egg. Irumyuui has lost most of her humanoid form, but she is still able to recognize Vueko and her children.[4]
Irumyuui gave birth to another child and begins to caress it, but Wazukyan takes it from her to butcher it. Irumyuui desperately cries out for her child that was taken from her. Seeing this, Vueko requests to let Irumyuui at least stay with her child until it dies. Wazukyan apologetically refuses the request, explaining that Pseudowater symptoms are best alleviated by fresh meat. He admires the beauty of the child and notes that he never wastes any of the baby. Wazukyan then kills the child and offers to have Vueko help cook the dead baby.[5]
Shaken by the sight, Vueko apologizes to Irumyuui in tears and contemplates her own weakness of being unable to help her. Vueko holds a knife, contemplating whether or not she has the strength to kill herself and Irumyuui. However, Irumyuui comforts her by giving her a hug, Vueko can hear Irumyuui's heart and remembers the human version of Irumyuui telling her that she is fine, as long Vueko stays with her. Vueko quietly sobs, unsure of what kind of hell will await them.[6]
The following days, Irumyuui's Children continue to be used as nourishment for the Ganja members. Belaf, who prefers starvation to eating, becomes so weak that Vueko has to force feed him. As he pleads to her to stop, Vueko thinks to herself that this must be what hell is like. The days continue to pass with Irumyuui giving birth, and Ganja slaughtering the children. People begin to pray to Irumyuui. Eventually, Irumyuui stops shrieking when they take her children. Irumyuui continues to grow taller and taller, until she has started to resemble what appears to be a tree trunk.[7]
Then one day, while being with Irumyuui, Vueko discovers the Cradle of Desire in a scar that had opened up in Irumyuui's chest. She is perplexed as she was certain it was previously broken. Wazukyan tells Vueko that when she got sick, he had the Interference Units search for another one, because Irumyuui had been growing weaker. It was as if Irumyuui was dying because Vueko was dying. Wazukyan feared that Irumyuui would die without a second Cradle to fulfill another wish.[8]
Suddenly, Irumyuui grabs Vueko and pulls her close. She becomes restless and begins moving. Vueko tries to ask her what is wrong, but gets no response. Wazukyan ominously tells her that the, "Time to see Irumyuui off" has come, and they should witness "Her true wish" be fulfilled.[9]
Irumyuui continues moving, while an unlucky Ganja member, Eilu, is snatched up by a predator and eaten. Wazukyan instructs the other members to stay close to Irumyuui and follow her while he supports the weakened Belaf along the way, who begs to be left behind. Suddenly, Irumyuui stops moving and starts consuming flying predators with tentacles sprouting out of her.[10]
Belaf, still pained by guilt, requests to be eaten by Irumyuui and offers himself to her as penance for eating her children. A giant hole opens up in Irumyuui, allowing Belaf to walk right inside her. As Belaf's flesh is consumed, he is simultaneously reconstructed and metamorphosed into a glorious serpent-like Narehate. The other ganja members, struck by the "beauty" of Belaf's new form, conclude that they will be forgiven for eating Irumyuui's Children if they offer themselves up to her in the same way. Wazukyan proclaims that this is the home they had been looking for, declaring that they must offer themselves unto Irumyuui, who is their queen. Only Vueko hesitates and Wazukyan takes notice of her.[11]
Vueko tells Wazukyan that she doesn't think this is Irumyuui's true wish. As Wazukyan questions Vueko about her intentions, she moves toward a cliff edge to commit suicide. If she dies, Irumyuui will grow sad and die as well, freeing her from this terrible life. Vueko jumps off as she tells Wazukyan she won't let anybody else have Irumyuui's true wish. But Wazukyan manages to grab on to her leg before she can fall, causing Vueko to hit her head on the cliffside and pass out. As she loses consciousness, Veuko notices that Wazukyan's body has changed and deduces that he also used a Cradle on himself.[12]
When Vueko wakes up, she finds herself naked and bound in the dark pit that Riko will later find her in. Wazukyan, now also turned into a Narehate, tells her that she is currently inside what used to be Irumyuui's head, as it is where Vueko could have the deepest connection to her. Vueko asks Wazukyan why he used a Cradle on himself, even though the Units warned them adults would suffer from using one. Wazukyan tells her that he did it in order to give the others faith in Irumyuui, as they pray to her. Wazukyan tells Vueko that he believes that Ganja was gathered here in the Abyss. The moment he saw her Star Compass, he felt a sense of homesickness, despite not having a home to go to. He tells her that homesickness has nothing to do with having a home. It's about chasing something that you will never have again. Vueko tells Wazukyan that for her, that something was Irumyuui. Wazukyan agrees and tells her that he hopes that the Abyss will continue to keep calling others down into it for the far future. He also tells her that while being in the dark pit, she will be able to feel Irumyuui's emotions and can watch over them from now on, and leaves her.[13]
In the darkness, Vueko is able to receive signals from various parts of the village and the now mindless Irumyuui. Vueko senses that Irumyuui secretly kept the second Cradle to fulfill her last true wish: The birth of her last child, Faputa, that one day she will take revenge for all her dead brethren.[14]
As Vueko senses Faputa's birth, she is relieved to know that Irumyuui didn't forgive Ganja for the slaughtering of her children. Faputa destroys the Interference Units before fleeing while screaming that about her regrets for her dead siblings and how her mother's soul was imprisoned flesh turned into a living space. While the Narehate that sacrificed their human bodies are unable to leave The Village of Iruburu, Faputa is unable to enter it. Vueko finds herself hoping that one day, Faputa will be able to carry out Irumyuui's final wish, so that she could one day find her own wish.[15]
Eventually, Vueko senses the signals of Irumyuui's returned and unborn children and begins to name them. They were the children that Irumyuui never got to name. She spends time with them, singing them lullabies when they can't sleep. She takes the place of their mother since Irumyuui can no longer speak and care for them. There, Vueko would remain imprisoned for countless years until Riko found her.[16]
Vueko ends her story before her bewildered audience. Vueko tells them Faputa has inherited the three Cradles from Irumyuui. Thus, Irumyuui lost the power to maintain the village, but is kept alive by the new value brought in by visitors of the village. Faputa is trying to free her mother, Irumyuui, which would mean the destruction of the village. She also tells them it is not easy to leave the village after having entered it once. Riko asks her if it is possible to convince Faputa to abandon her wish to destroy the village, but Vueko tells her she most likely wouldn't listen. Riko also asks what Vueko is going to do now, and Vueko responds that all she wants to do now is not forget Irumyuui.[17]
