Like a Brother (tentative title) is the seventieth chapter of the Made in Abyss manga series.

Synopsis[]

After causing the Mysterious Beast to retreat, the combined crews of Hello Abyss and Hail Hex work to retrieve and secure Nanachi. Fearing that the loss of blood is attracting creatures, Yataramar and Faputa move horizontally along the underside of the cliff, to avoid The Curse of the Abyss, and meet up with the rest of the team.

Nishagora and Tepaste usher everyone into a cave ahead, which they had scouted. Reg and Faputa take a Crumple Pot to gather water while everyone else prepares the site for Nanachi.

Yataramar remarks that bodily secretions from the Mysterious Beast have circulated through Nanachi's body and that he may be able to remove it, using his ability. However, he expresses concern that the process will cause tremendous strain on Nanachi and may result in death from shock. Unsure of what to do, Riko searches for anything that could aid Nanachi in the procedure and Reg spots a wrapped flask with Beyond Glyphs. Faputa recognizes that it has her mother's scent and Reg notices that the wrapping looks like something worn by Mepopohon. They conclude that it was meant as a farewell gift from when they had left The Village of Iruburu. The liquid inside appears to be a unique alcohol, Dream-retreat Alcoholic Medicine, which sparks curiosity from Hail Hex. Realizing that the drink will aid in preventing shock, Yataramar begins treatment immediately.

Reg dutifully serves the drink to Nanachi, as his friend rouses from the pain. Yataramar explains that the success of the procedure will depend on Nanachi's own strength. Reg asks about Nanachi's leg and Yataramar expresses doubt that Nanachi will be able to walk again. Reg vows to carry Nanachi, if he must. Life slowly fills Nanachi, but they seem mostly unaware of their surroundings, thinking that Reg is Mitty. Nanachi, in an emotional state, grasps onto Reg while Yataramar says that Nanachi's status will probably remain in flux.

Yataramar's hand gives out beneath him, a result of recoil from being released by Srajo's White Whistle. Yataramar is thanked and given some water, so that he may recover. While resting, he explains that the elixir used is incredibly complicated to create and requires a significant amount of time, at least 100 years. He expresses his amazement at the purity and asks just where they procured it from. Riko explains that it came from Faputa's "hometown" and that she was born on the 6th Layer of The Abyss.

This revelation shocks Srajo, prompting her to explain that 100 years in the 6th Layer would be at least 3,000 years on the surface and that whoever created it came from a time beyond the current 2,000 year cycle. She is once again impressed by the uniqueness of Riko's team. As the origin of the elixir was deduced from the Beyond Glyphs printed on it, which are believed to come from ancient civilizations, Srajo begins to believe in the origin of Faputa herself as a princess of a lost kingdom.

Nanachi sleepily mutters about regrets, expressing remorse for actions that Riko assumes are related to Bondrewd and the production of Cartridges.

Reg is surprised to see Menae drawing a portrait of Nanachi, in a journal. Menae explains that he wants to memorialize Nanachi for saving the life of him and his twin. Srajo bows to Reg and asks for him to allow Menae to continue. She then explains that, because of unavoidable circumstances, Sherumi & Menae will only be able to live for one more month. Despite the use of spinal replacements and limb replacements, they still only have a limited amount of time left and that the drawing is to preserve evidence that they had lived.

Menae is brought to tears by Nanachi's sacrifice while Reg attempts to calm him down and asks to be relied upon more, in the future. Reg asks to be thought of "as a brother". Menae responds "roger", but realizes that the response may have been too formal.

Reg realizes they need more water and Nishagora comes back to guide Reg to a waterfall she found on the other side of the cave. As Reg looks to the other side of the cliff where the cave opens up, he sees large claw markings and blast markings strewn across the landscape. As Reg stares in awe, Nishagora expresses her amazement to the boy. Looking at the battlefield, Reg is suddenly jolted by a memory of a tearful Girl-type. She calls him "brother", demanding that he look her in the eyes. She mentions "Kiriinia", with the Blue Pendant shown prominently, but the memory is cut short by Nishagora.

Worriedly, Reg wonders if he was responsible for the damage that lies before him. As the scene zooms in on a distant encampment, a mysterious sniper is surprised to see Reg coming back. The sniper likens the situation to an arsonist returning to the scene of their crime, while attempting to remember the name of the phenomenon in question. They then make a remark for Tepaste to "just wait".

Callbacks[]

  • The drink that Riko found in their luggage was likely gifted to them in the final hours before The Village of Iruburu's complete destruction, when Mepopohon had been handling their luggage. Mepopohon tries to explain something to Reg, at the time, but he has no idea what is being said.[1] In the anime, Mepopohon's words are translated, revealing that she had left the medicine as a gift in lieu of their hotel refund.[2]
