Whereabouts of the Soul is the sixty-seventh chapter of the Made in Abyss manga series.

Synopsis[]

The chapter begins with Remayo and Neyozel of the Umbra Hands and Hail Hex, respectively, wandering through the 6th Layer of The Abyss. As they stop to eat a meal, Remayo explains their current situation and Neyozel laments his fate, having been left behind at Ido Front.

Elsewhere, in the 7th Layer, Hello Abyss and Hail Hex continue their journey into the depths. Curious about the environment, Riko encourages Reg to stand inside of a strange current flowing through the air. They note its extreme temperature difference, which causes frost to accumulate on whatever the current touches.

Srajo engages in conversation with Riko, explaining mysteries of The Abyss, such as souls, Birthday-Death Disease, and time dilation. In turn, Riko contemplates her origins with the Curse-Warding Box and the words spoken to her by Ozen. Nanachi inquires about resurrection, with Mitty in mind, but Srajo is doubtful whether such a thing is possible. Riko encourages Nanachi not to lose hope, citing all the inexplicable phenomena that they've encountered, revealing to Srajo that Faputa is immune to The Curse. Tepaste attempts to speak to Nanachi, but she is cut off by Nishagora.

Nishagora suddenly stops. The Delvers are made uneasy by a change in their surroundings. Reg becomes alarmed that he is unable to detect Nanachi's scent. Srajo calls for everyone to form into a defensive position. Nanachi worries that something is interfering with their senses. With little notice, an unknown presence strikes out at Sherumi & Menae. Nanachi urgently dives into the twins, sparing them. In a monologue, Nanachi tries to understand their own motivations for making such a fateful decision.

The teams look on in shock, as Nanachi is dragged away.

Referbacks[]

  • Neyozel's whereabouts after Chapter 64 are explained in this chapter; he had stayed behind on purpose to let Hail Hex escape, and was captured by Bido. Since he had been Hail Hex's cook, Yataramar took up the role of "substitute cook" in his stead.
  • Srajo reveals that the Birthday-Death Disease, rumored about in Orth around the time Reg and Riko departed, is in fact the "Breath" written about in The Song of Hariyomari.
  • Tepaste approaches Nanachi about Cravagli, having earlier confirmed with Reg that they had found his corpse. Nanachi mistakenly believes that Tepaste was referring to Srajo as "the Mythographer (ミサグラファ)".
