Made in Abyss (メイドインアビス, Meido in Abisu) is a Japanese franchise started with the Made in Abyss manga by Akihito Tsukushi. It has been serialized online via Takeshobo's digital publication Web Comic Gamma since October 2012, and has been collected in 13 tankōbon volumes through August 30, 2024. In the year 2023, it received the 52nd Manga Kingdom Tottori Award by the Japanese Cartoonists Association for "marking a line between its methods and those of preexisting adventure fantasy manga".[1][2]
An anime television series adaptation by Kinema Citrus aired from July 7, 2017 to September 29, 2017 over 13 episodes. It won Anime of the Year Award at the 2nd Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2018. Two recap movies were theatrically aired on January 4, 2019 and January 18, 2019, with a third movie covering content beyond the first season of the anime having aired in theaters on January 17, 2020. A second season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun premiered on July 6, 2022 and ran for 12 episodes to September 28, 2022.
Plot summary[]
The enormous cave system, known as The Abyss, is the only unexplored place in the world. Nobody knows how far down this titanic pit goes, inhabited by strange and wondrous creatures and full of mysterious ancient Relics whose purpose is unknown to modern man. Generations of bold adventurers have been drawn by the cryptic depths of The Abyss. Over the course of time those bold enough to explore the dangerous pit came to be known as "Cave Raiders".
In Orth, the town at the edge of The Abyss, there lives a little orphan named Riko, who dreams of becoming as great a cave raider as her mother was and solving the great mystery of the pit. One day exploring the murky depths she stumbles upon a little boy, who turns out to be a robot...
