General Questions[]

When do chapters release?[]

The online comic which publishes Made in Abyss updates each Friday. However, there is no fixed schedule for new chapter releases. This means they come out as the author, Tsukushi Akihito, completes them.[1]

Does the author have any assistants?[]

Daisuke Habata & Yunkeru-shi have been credited as assistants in multiple volume releases, starting with Volume 7.[2] Hoshikuzudo was credited with "Clothing Designs" in Volume 8.[3]

Do White Whistles get along with each other?[]

There are some other White Whistles who are at least acquainted with each other and have a shallow relationship.[4]

Are all Narehate (Hollows) the same species?[]

The terms "Narehate" or "Hollow" were initially used to reflect the "loss of humanity" which causes a person to become a "hollow husk" of who they once were.[5] Later, the terms "Narehate" or "Hollow" are used as a catchall, being applied to those that may still retain their humanity but have lost their human form or those that resemble such beings. These varieties are the result of their unique origins.

  • Various children collected by Bondrewd were subjected to the Curse of the 6th Layer. They were disposed of in Bondrewd's Miniature Garden Of Dawn.[6]
  • Nanachi and Mitty both experienced the Blessing ritual. Nanachi retained their humanity, but Mitty did not.[7][8]
  • The inhabitants of The Village of Iruburu are also referred to as Narehate. They intentionally cast aside their human forms for Narehate ones manifested by the village and are bound to it.[9][10]
  • Faputa is referred to as "Princess of the Narehate". She was born with the aid of three powerful relics, the Cradles of Desire.[11][12]
  • Maaa was created from excess Value that had accumulated in the village. Despite never having been human, she is also referred to as "Narehate".[13]
  • The existence of Juusou (those born as Narehate, possessing humanity) indicates that there are additional, unknown means through which an individual may become a "Narehate".[14]

Series Mechanics[]

How does the Curse work? Can it be avoided?[]

The Curse of the Abyss will take effect regardless of time taken to ascend. The strains are triggered by interaction with The Force Field itself. According to Nanachi's explanation, a person may pass right through, during descent. On ascent, The Force Field shrouds the body until it is pierced like a thin cloth, after rising 10 meters. When this happens, the strain begins to manifest.[15]

This can't be stopped by ascending in shorter intervals over time or rising slowly, as the individual will still be "shrouded", regardless of when one continues again.[16]

Are Narehate immune to the Curse?[]

Narehate without a functioning mind, like Mitty and the one left at the Altar of the Absolute Boundary, appear to no longer be affected by the Curse.[17][18]

Blessed Narehate, such as Nanachi, are still susceptible to the effects of the Curse.[17][19]

While not (strictly speaking) a Narehate, Faputa, who is known as "Princess of the Narehate", is also immune to the Curse. The reasons for this are not fully understood.[20]

While never directly confirmed, Srajo's surprise that living beings such as Faputa are immune to the Curse suggests that Juusou are probably still affected.[20]

Are there any other creatures that are immune to the Curse?[]

The Curse of the Abyss can also affect the creatures that live within it, but not always. For instance, if an insect uses some ability beyond the five senses that humans have, then that ability would not be affected by the Curse of the 5th Layer.[21]

Can delvers acclimate to the Curse?[]

Yes, Delvers are capable of acclimating to The Curse of the Abyss. The orphans at Belchero Orphanage are instructed that they may be able to acclimate to the Curse of the 1st Layer.[22] Nanachi had also expressed that they had acclimated to the Curse of the 5th Layer.[23] It is unknown to what degree Delvers may mitigate the effects of the Curse, through experience and training.

Team Riko Characters[]

Riko[]

Does Riko still carry the Blue Pendant that she found near Reg?[]

At some point before leaving Orth, Riko tied the Blue Pendant to her undergarments. While Riko does not wear undergarments while delving, it is generally assumed to still be carried on her person.[24][25]

Reg[]

Is Reg the same individual as the one found in Lyza's notes?[]

No, the sketch in Lyza's notes is of a different individual, with noticeable differences in the notes; for example a section describing the claw-like hands of them.[26]

What do the patterns on Reg's helmet mean?[]

Regardless of grade, all Artifacts have a pattern that is theorized by Nanachi to imply how many times they can be used before they become dysfunctional.[27][28] As such, Nanachi assumes that the pattern changes in the display after Reg used the incinerator is the same.[29] Reg took in the reserve electricity of the power plant at the Ido Front which Bondrewd stated rather than the electricity, it's power itself that Reg had taken in.[30] In the resulting battle, Reg used his incinerator six times.[31][32][33] The pattern displayed afterwards was still more vibrant than it had been before the power plant incident and Nanachi made an estimate of Reg having about ten shots of the incinerator left according to it.[34]

Is Reg an Interference Unit?[]

It is not known what kind of being Reg truly is, or what his origin is. Due to design similarities, Gaburoon wondered if Reg and they might share the same creator; noting that Interference Units don't cross layers and them having no data regarding Interference Units of Reg's kind.[35]

Why wasn't Reg affected by Ozen using her white whistle?[]

For a relic to be affected by the effects of blowing a white whistle, there must be some sort of relationship between the white whistle itself, the user, and the relic.[36]

In the case of Riko's white whistle, it is very obvious that Reg (the relic) had a close relationship with Riko (the user), but also was friends with Prushka (the whistle). However, there was no relationship at all between him and Ozen, and whoever was Ozen's whistle.[37][38]

Nanachi[]

What is Nanachi's gender?[]

Nanachi does not have a gender. Both Tsukushi Akihito (series creator) and Shiori Izawa (seiyuu for Nanachi) have confirmed that Nanachi no longer has a gender, since becoming Narehate.[39][40]

While Nanachi was still human, there was a gender, but the author has not publicly revealed what it was.[41] On a number of occasions, Tsukushi has teased fans, often saying that he leaves it up to the imagination.[42] However, Shiori has stated that she did in fact receive the answer from Tsukushi and the reason.[40]

Is Nanachi immune to the Curse of the Abyss?[]

Nanachi can see The Force Field, but is not immune to The Curse of the Abyss. This can be seen when they were shown excreting blood while leaving Ido Front with Mitty[43]. Nanachi was also struck by the the 5th Layer at the Stingerhead nest and at Ido Front itself.[23][44]

Was Nanachi really going to die during the Ido Front arc?[]

Yes, Tsukushi and his editor discussed the possibility of killing off Nanachi during the Ido Front arc.[45] This ended up not happening because of the influence of Prushka's inclusion in the story and because of an appreciation for a trio of main characters that Tsukushi developed during the production of Konami's The Sword of Etheria.[46]

The scenario would have played out with Nanachi and Bondrewd dying at each other's hands, or by Nanachi defending a character from Bondrewd, fulfilling the sacrifice necessary for Riko and Reg to move on.[46]

Did Nanachi build the hut on the 4th Layer?[]

No, the hut was once used as a mushroom farm, at some point in the past.[47] It remains unknown who built it.

Orth Characters[]

Torka[]

Is Torka the person that became Lyza's white whistle?[]

No, Lyza already was a White Whistle Delver while she was married to Torka.[48] The Life-reverberating Stone used for Lyza's Whistle is of a person named Doni.[49]

Seeker Camp Characters[]

Ozen[]

Why didn't Ozen tell Riko how to obtain a white whistle?[]

While never addressed by Ozen, in-story, draft artwork of her with her White Whistle prominently displayed includes a quote which reads: "Wouldn't it be boring if I told you everything?". Implying that the information she withheld from Riko was done so out of amusement.[47] Bondrewd attributes the incident to her being "ill natured".[50]

Ido Front Characters[]

Bondrewd and the Umbra Hands[]

Who are the Umbra Hands?[]

The Umbra Hands is the name of Bondrewd's group of Delvers.[51] All Umbra Hands chose to become one on their own will. Some are not even Delvers, but bounty hunters who originally came after Bondrewd and joined him due to his skills of persuasion.[52]

Does Bondrewd control the Umbra Hands?[]

The Umbra Hands have free will and their own consciousness. However, Bondrewd can implant his consciousness on them at will. Bondrewd can either assume full control over one of them, or put them into "Auto Bondrewd Mode" at any time to assume control over them and manipulate them like drones. However, this causes their movements to become more sluggish, as Bondrewd has to access all the information in parallel.[28]

How does Bondrewd control the Umbra Hands?[]

Bondrewd owns a Special Grade Artifact named Zoaholic. This relic allows him to multiply his consciousness and control other bodies. As long as Bondrewd has available Umbra Hands, and the Zoaholic relic, he is virtually immortal.[53]

How did Bondrewd revive after Riko's team defeated him the first time?[]

Because of Zoaholic, Bondrewd's consciousness is able to "jump" from one body to another of the Umbra Hands' bodies.[54]

After his "welcoming" body was destroyed by Reg in their first fight, he jumped bodies to that of the Umbra Hand that was guarding Prushka. The new body recovered Bondrewd's mask and whistle from the old body and put it on, essentially becoming the new Bondrewd.[55]

How did Bondrewd's body change shape and clothing to match his old body?[]

Bondrewd has certain heavily armed Umbra Hands. These Umbra Hands wear white outfits. Under this clothing, some cotton padding hides the real shape and weaponry these bodies equip.[52] The Umbra Hand that was guarding Prushka, and to which Bondrewd "jumped" into after his previous body was killed, was fully equipped with Sparagmos, Far Caress, Gangway, Shaker, the tail, and possibly other weapons, but they were all hidden under the white cotton clothing.[54][56][57][53] Once Bondrewd was in control of this body, he ripped the padding away and his true looks became visible.[58]

Why does the body Bondrewd have a multi-layered eye with tentacles?[]

The multi-layered eye, as well as the tentacles, are two separate Artifacts of the body Bondrewd took over.[52]

Did Bondrewd die at the end of the second fight? Why does he appear again?[]

The combat body that Riko's team defeated in Ido Front was indeed killed. However, Bondrewd used Zoaholic to make his conscience jump into another of the Umbra Hands.[59] At the end, when Riko's Team is departing, it's Bondrewd in a new body giving them blessings and prayers for their journey.[60]

Did Bondrewd plan for Prushka to become Riko's white whistle?[]

Bondrewd had assumed that Riko would be the one to lose her life and create a Life-reverberating Stone, after ruling out Reg and Nanachi as candidates.[50] He also attempts to assure Riko that this outcome "doesn't sound so bad".[61]

Did Riko's Team destroy Zoaholic?[]

They didn't. At the end of the fight, Prushka expressed her will for them not to fight each other anymore.[62] Since Riko is able to sense Prushka's emotions, even as a Life-reverberating Stone, Riko told Nanachi that they should leave Bondrewd alone.[63][59] They had an off-screen negotiation with Bondrewd after defeating his second body.[21] The full circumstances of these negotiations are unknown, but it appears that the continuation Bondrewd's human experiments were not a factor in them.[64]

Why didn't they shatter Bondrewd's mask at the end of the fight?[]

Same reason as above.

Why did Bondrewd become Blessed during the fight in Ido Front?[]

Bondrewd became Blessed by the love of Prushka while ascending from the Miniature Garden Of Dawn, that is at the 6th Layer.[8]

Why didn't Bondrewd become Blessed when he returned from his expeditions to the 6th Layer?[]

Love is required for achieving The Blessing. The person in the cartridge needs to have a love bond with the subject, while the subject is protected from the Curse.[8] It can be concluded that none of the other children in the cartridges had such a feeling for Bondrewd.

Prushka[]

Why did Prushka turn into a Life-reverberating Stone?[]

The requirements for creating Life-reverberating Stones aren't clear, but it involves a human to sacrifice themselves for the sake of another person to push forward in the Abyss. Ido Front was used since ancient times to perform such ritual[65], so it is perhaps required that the sacrifice suffers the Curse of the 6th Layer. Prushka was in one of Bondrewd's cartridges when he and Reg fell to the Miniature Garden that is in the 6th Layer, and then, during the fight, both combatants climbed back to Ido Front in the 5th Layer.[53] During the ascension, Prushka was hit by the Curse of the 6th Layer, while she was wishing for Riko to push forward in her adventure in the Abyss.[66] Probably, these circumstances were very similar to those that happen during the ritual to create Life-reverberating Stones, causing Prushka to become Riko's white whistle.[citation needed]

Iruburu Characters[]

Mitty and Belaf[]

Why is Mitty in Iruburu?[]

The Mitty in The Village of Iruburu is an exact copy of the Mitty at the time Bondrewd visited the village; according to Belaf, even down to the soul itself being an exact replica.[63]

Faputa[]

Why is Faputa not affected by the Curse?[]

Strictly speaking, Faputa is a being created by the village without prior existence.[67] As such, unlike Narehate who were priorly human, Faputa is not affected by the Curse, but has been generally accepted to fall into the summary of Narehate as "species" due to the villagers referring to her as "The Princess of the Narehate".[68][69]

Is the pattern that Faputa has in her eye the same pattern as the one Reg has on his helmet?[]

The pattern in Faputa's eye is different from all patterns displayed in the lens of Reg's helmet so far.[70][71][72][34][73]

Places[]

Orth[]

Which language is spoken in Orth?[]

The language spoken in Orth is a small fraction of the less complex Nether Glyphs. From the said to be tens of thousands of pictographs found among the ruins inside the Abyss only the simple ones were selected and matched up with sounds of the official language, and thus became the Nether Glyphs used in Orth. Furthermore, each one of the characters had a sound and meaning, referred to as Ideographs, and have been used in Orth since approximately 300 years ago as "simplified characters"; initially they were used by Delvers as codes.[74]

5th Layer[]

How big is the 5th Layer?[]

It is the thinnest vertical layer of the Abyss, being only 1,000 meters deep, but it is also the widest one horizontally and, according to Riko, said to be ten of times the size of Orth.[75]

Is the 5th Layer in danger of collapsing?[]

No. Within the 5th Layer exist the Water supports which can collapse, and "Water Bastions" which are permanent.[52]

How do balloons fly up from the 6th Layer?[]

The Abyss's shaft doesn't stop at the Sea of Corpses. It goes on downwards as a hole in the middle of the sea, with a circular waterfall pouring down to the 6th Layer.[76] This hole, at the center of the 5th Layer, isn't the route that White Whistles use for their Last Dives. Instead, they use the Altar of the Absolute Boundary at Ido Front, which is situated closer to the outer edge of this layer. Mail Balloons, and Funeral Slips, can move freely between layers through the central shaft. See the sketch below, by Tsukushi, featuring the central shaft and circular waterfall in the Sea of Corpses, as well as a Mail Balloon ascending from the 6th Layer, with Ido Front towards the left side, for reference.

Ido Front[]

Is Bondrewd responsible for constructing Ido Front?[]

No, Ido Front was once a ritual site used thousands of years ago.[77][78][79]

6th Layer[]

Why couldn't Ganja find a viable water source on the 6th Layer, if Riko's group could find one?[]

Due to the the long time that has passed since Ganja's time on the 6th Layer, it is possible that shifts in geography allowed for small water reserves to be unearthed or dip from above into it. Thus Riko's group was able to find water.[80]

The Village of Iruburu[]

When was the village created?[]

According to Wazukyan, it has been 150 years, on the 6th Layer, since the village was created.[81]

Which language is spoken in the village?[]

The language of the village is based of pictographs with more than one meaning. According to the interaction between Sherumi and Menae, the characters are seemingly unlimited in number and new kinds are still being found. They are considered separated from the Nether Glyphs used in Orth and are called Beyond Glyphs.[82]

Why can't the villagers leave Iruburu?[]

All villagers have given up their original human bodies willingly to the village and took on a form of their respective desires.[83] As such, they have become a part of the village, are bound to it, and a force field prevents them from leaving.[84] Furthermore, nothing created in the village can exist outside of its protective boundary.[85] This also applies to the bodies of the villagers, causing them to fade away if outside of said boundary.[86]

Objects[]

Cartridges[]

How do Cartridges work?[]

Cartridges are made from the flesh and essence of humans who are the easiest to transport and won't be missed.[87] The Curse is deflected away from Bondrewd and onto the person in the Cartridge instead.[88]

What is inside a Cartridge?[]

Only the brain, part of the spine and enough guts to live for a few days until the expiration date of the respective Cartridge; as well as a liquid drug cocktail to manipulate the ecstasy and terror. After all has been thoroughly scraped off, it's wrapped in skin and flesh.[89]

Artifacts[]

Cradle of Desire[]

How many Cradles of Desire do we know about?[]

All in all, three Cradles of Desire are confirmed.[12]

  1. The first one found by Ganja and given to Irumyuui during the Pseudowater Crisis.[90]
  2. The second one given to Irumyuui by Wazukyan to strengthen her power.[91]
  3. The third one that Wazukyan failed to use and was absorbed by Irumyuui when he was transformed into a Narehate.[92]

According to Vueko, all three were inherited by Faputa.[93]

Thousand-men Pins[]

Does each pin give the user the exact strength of one-thousand people?[]

No, there is no direct relation for the terminology "strength of a thousand men" to specific individuals as it functions similar to a phrase like "strong like a bear"; it is basically used to describe someone or something as "very strong" and not akin to a specific number of actual individuals being added to the strength.[94]

Why is Ozen tall?[]

The author has explained that Ozen is in possession of relics that have not been shown in the story, including the relic responsible for her extraordinary height.[95]
