—Cravagli |
Cravagli (クラヴァリ, Kuravari) is a Black Whistle Delver who is regarded as a genius solo Delver among the Black Whistles. At some point in time, he made a connection with Tepaste.[1]
Appearance[]
Cravagli is a tall, bulky and muscular man. His face is somewhat rugged, with many markings in its lower half. He wears a hat adorned with a feather and goggles. The rest of his attire consists of an open jacket lined with a pelt-like material, his whistle (flanked by trophy teeth), a harness, gloves, pants, and boots.[2]
Personality[]
Cravagli is shown to be very level-headed, capable of keeping his cool in tense situations. He is shown to make good character assessments and values keeping etiquette.[3] He has his own personalized way of greeting people. He chooses not to rely on luck, instead making it a ritual as a sort of "game" to pray for success of something he sets out to do.[4]
History[]
Pre-Orth Arc[]
Some time after acquiring the Star Compass, Nat, Shiggy, Kiyui, and Riko can be seen lazing about in Orth's West District. Riko's curiosity gets the better of her and she strikes the Star Compass with a rock, hoping to break it open. The strike causes the Compass to bounce down a hill, with Riko frantically pursuing it.[5]
While Riko hunts for the Compass, the other orphans spot Jiruo, their leader from Belchero Orphanage, and Hablog, a Black Whistle Delver, on their way to a meeting at the Tumble Tavern. Shiggy heads further down the hill, searching for the Compass.[6]
Shiggy sees an unfamiliar Black Whistle, Cravagli, pick up the Star Compass. Recognizing the potential consequences of being seen as a Red Whistle in possession of an unappraised Artifact, Shiggy explains to Cravagli that the Compass was dropped by a clumsy woman at the top of the hill. Cravagli, however, is more interested in the fact that the Star Compass "looks just like the real damn thing", unclear of just what exactly he is comparing the Compass to. He explains to Shiggy that the Artifact is a sort of "gazing window" and that relics are found when it's a person's time to find them, especially that one.[7]
Remembering his reservation, Cravagli is forced to cut the conversation short, departing with a friendly "dya-hode!". No longer fearing the possibility of being punished, the orphans continue their misadventures.[8]
While at the Tumble Tavern Cravagli is shown eating many Hamoroge Bowls, Tepaste asks him if he ever gets tired of it, to which Cravagli states he has a soft spot for the dish. [9]
Tepaste also asks him if he would like a quickie with her after having finished eating but Cravagli reclines stating it would be bad for his mojo which leads to Tepaste also ordering a bowl and shortly afterwards noting the presence of Umbra Hands in the pub to Cravagli.[10]
As Cravagli takes a glance, the presence of the Umbra Hands, the Subterranean Bandits, and Hablog are shown. As Tepaste notes Gallice among them, she wonders if a "Shroud" is among them. Gallice notices they're being observed which prompts Cravagli to greet them with his personal greeting, "Dyaho-de", to disarm the situation.[11]
Then, he notes being impressed that Tepaste was able to notice them without their masks to which she replies that the way they walk and their voices are all distinct. Tepaste then shifts the conversation to them now having quite the mess on their hands with the one left behind in the 2nd Layer. Cravagli replies to it that there is no way it could have been hidden and from the looks of it several First Grade Artifacts were visible; plus fearing they most likely will be found out on their next delve.[12]
Tepaste wonders in return if the Priestess is alright to which Cravagli replies that they will try to get more information later. Cravagli also asks on any words of the others to which he is informed all they have to go on are the contents of a letter and is also asked if he thinks it might be a "Nest".[13]
Hablog overhears this conversation and wonders if they are talking about the big joint delving project that is coming up. As the conversation progresses, Tepaste wonders if any of the White Whistles will take part in the big delve to which Cravagli tells her that no mention of Special Grade Artifacts were made and Hablog will be in charge of this delve as he has a knack for it due to being broad-minded and on these big delves even sworn enemies work together.[14]
The conversation is interrupted by Yelme, who tells Tepaste that the tavern is no place for Non-Delvers. He acknowledges her Netherworld Locks, twists in her hair that indicate exposure to the deeper depths of The Abyss. Finding her suspicious, he questions her about whether or not she is just hiding her Whistle. Tepaste teases him, replying that she can't show him there. She leans into Yelme, noting his prior criminal offenses, and remarks what a shame it would be if he were to be punished again. Yelme, however, is more interested in the fact that she is aware of his reputation. She subdues him with a quick series of movements, though it is not immediately clear how.[15]
As he staggers over, Cravagli catches him and places him on his lap. He tells Yelme a proper greeting is important as it is the basis for communication and as the Hamoroge Bowl ordered by Tepaste arrives Cravagli feeds it to Yelme while elaborating on the dish and noting it works well against tipsiness from drinking to much as it is clear Yelme had been drinking.[3]
As he feeds it to Yelme, Yelme asks for Tepaste's name to which she energetically replies but also notes she doesn't think they will meet again.[16]
As Cravagli and Tepaste make their way through Orth after having left the Pub, they note that the people they saw at it will be part of the big delving expedition and Cravagli notes his desire to depart before things get complicated and thus they would leave via the abandoned factory route into The Abyss by sunrise for their illegal last dive. He then notices that a few things are missing from his pockets and it is revealed Yelme picked his pocket while Cravagli fed him.[17]
Curse Fleet Arc[]
Having already ventured deep into the 6th Layer, Cravagli can be seen with grievous wounds. He acknowledges the lack of feeling in his hand, his broken left leg, and other injuries. He is then contacted by Tepaste via a Communication Device. She asks him if he is alright and whether he's able to make it to her location.[18]
Cravagli recounts his wounds to her and Tepaste notices that she still has his rope, realizing that she may not make it back to him. He tells her to continue on, as their pursuer is still coming after her.[19]
With ambivalence, Tepaste remarks that Cravagli had prayed so hard for success yet he had no such luck. To this, Cravagli responds he doesn't really rely on luck and that those prayers are just a ritual to center the mind, his way of "playing". He tells her that when you forget about play the heart grows hard and brittle. He advises her to keep her hard and brittle core for when things get tough.[20]
Tepaste, teary-eyed, replies she will do just that, knowing that she most likely won't see him again. As their communicators get out of range, Cravagli tells her they will meet up in the "Nest." Cravagli reflects on his injuries and begins to climb down, singing The Song of Hariyomari. He stops to rest in a secluded alcove, finally succumbing to the cumulative exhaustion, injury, and dehydration.[21]
Some time later, Meinya and the rest of Team Riko happen upon the corpse of Cravagli. [22] Reg panics, but Nanachi quickly informs him that the man is already dead. As the group wonders about his circumstances, Nanachi searches him for any useful Artifacts. They find an All-purpose Lock Pick, Gentle Knock, and an Air Dumpling, Mermaid Burp.[23]
