Communication Devices ( (つう) (しん) () , Tsūshinki) are a type of wireless technology used by Delvers.[1]

Description[]

They are used to maintain contact with each other while they are too far away from each other to speak directly. The communication device used by Jiruo more closely resembles a headset, while the typed owned by Nanachi is in the shape of a small round speaker that may be worn as a ring, inserted directly into the ear (similar to an earplug), or attached to surfaces (such as Reg's helmet).[2][3][4] A U-shaped variant can be seen being used by a sentry monitoring The Wharf.[5]

The device has a microphone, a receiver, and transmitter capable of broadcasting signals to other similar devices within range.[6]

Limitations[]

Communication Devices have a limited effective range. The sound quality will diminish the further apart two devices are from each other until it either becomes unintelligible or the devices disconnect entirely.[7]

They are also subject to disruption from The Force Field, which is especially troublesome if they are used to communicate between layers, although they can still function if the units are relatively close to one another. It is unknown if they can be chain wired to provide a wider range.[7]

Trivia[]

  • The Communication Devices can't be used outside The Abyss or places in it where The Force Field isn't present at all.[8] One can be seen in use in The Wharf. Presumably, it can function there because The Wharf is the lowest area of Orth.[5][9]
